ABSTRACT: The inclusion of people with disabilities (PwDs) in a professional environment, although supported by legislation, still presents difficulties. The justification of the companies is the low level of professional qualification of these people. Therefore, this research sought to investigate, through a case study, how is performed the insertion of these individuals into a medium-sized company in the household appliances sector, located in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MG). The research was carried out with thirteen PwDs and a professional responsible for the selection, training and follow-up of employees. The subjects’ observations were made in their actual work situations, followed by in-depth interviews with each of them and with the person in charge of the company’s Human Resources Department. Finally, content analysis was performed, establishing the major categories and subcategories of analysis. The results showed that the type of disability influences the hiring process, although the company is willing to hire the PwDs as a way of complying with the quota law. In general, the presence of a limited view on the PwDs and signs of a change of attitudes toward inclusion were observed. The company uses a single training program for all employees, regardless whether they are PwDs or not, and use the Citizen Network and the Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE) for follow-up, professionalization and selection. These are the only actions aimed at the development of these workers. Although they expressed satisfaction in their work, there was a tendency to accommodate the PwDs to their present condition, since they do not perceive possibilities of growth in the company. Finally, there was no concern about structural adaptations in the work environment, since the company prefers to hire people with less severe disabilities and, therefore, do not require this type of adjustment. It can be concluded that its priority is compliance with the quota law, since the company favors persons with light deficiencies, without actually worrying about their inclusion, denying them real possibilities of personal and professional development.
